Nintendo is most commonly known as the maker of video game systems and games that excite and challenge people of all ages. Brendan Spaar got his first Nintendo system when he was in 2nd grade. It is still in his collection along with the Super Nintendo, Nintendo64, Game Boy and Wii. Most of the games were designed to test skill, reflexes and just plain stamina because playing could go on for hours non-stop.

Along came the Wii and a slight shift in gaming to a more interactive way of playing. No longer were the video game systems looked at as something strictly for kids. The days of being confined to a chair in front of a screen were coming to an end. Even senior citizens could be found using Wii Fit to get moving.

It seems that Nintendo is continuing to push from the gaming area of technology and into the possibly larger health/living area. The newest offerings from the gaming giant will be in the QOL (quality of life) health focused devices. The first one we’ll be seeing is a bedside sensor designed to track sleep, send that info into the cloud and give suggestions for getting more rest.

Nintendo’s president wants to redefine the company’s idea of entertainment. The company was founded in 1889 to make Japanese playing cards so the emphasis has always been on entertainment. It’ll be interesting to see if this new venture proves to be successful. It’s a gamble to go in a new direction but Brendan Spaar hopes they won’t leave the gaming sector in a deep sleep while they pursue this new venture.

Count Chocula, it's not just for breakfast anymore.

chocula_beer

When you think of cereal, you usually picture it in a bowl with milk. Brendan Spaar has been known to eat cereal for dinner sometimes or even use it in a snack of Chex Mix. Never would you expect it to be used to make beer...until now.

A Fort Collins brewery has done just that, used cereal in their brew. Recently, there was a shortage of the Count Chocula cereal at two Albertson's grocery stores. Seems someone came in and cleaned them out of every box. The guilty cereal napper is Black Bottle Brewery in Fort Collins.

The chocolatey cereal was being used to give flavor to a new beer. This isn't the first time they've used cereal to give a different twist to their beer. They have a Cerealiously beer series that has transformed Golden Grahams, Reese's Puffs and Cinnamon Toast Crunch into a milky stout.

Don't think that they actually have chocolate and marshmallow pieces floating around. The process is similar to dry-hopping a beer. They put the cereal into a hop back so it doesn't get into the beer. The idea started out as a joke but according to the brewery, it turned out good.

The Chocula brew goes on sale October 30th, just in time for Halloween. And if you are really feeling adventurous, they plan to release a brew using Lucky Charms for St. Patrick's Day and Cap'n Crunch for another occasion.

The weather is changing and so are we.

It's the time of the year when the leaves are starting to change and it's getting cooler outside. People seem to have more energy to get out and do things instead of staying inside where it's artificially cool.

You might see Brendan Spaar out running in training for the next marathon. Since 2012 he's been working up the courage and stamina to participate in one. Yard work is another way to work out while doing something productive.

With the Fall season comes election time. Another time of things changing are the political signs that clutter up the landscape and the tv/radio ads that bombard us. Imagine if all the money spent on campaign ads could be used for the causes the candidates support. That might be a better way to decide who is truly running to make a difference rather than "in it to win it".

Brendan Spaar hasn't decided who will get his vote for Governor. The candidates are far apart in their campaigns. Governor Deal has made great changes in several areas including prison reform and has tried to stimulate the economy by encouraging business tax breaks. Will this be enough to keep him in the Governor's Mansion? State Senator Jason Carter has the drive and people know the Carter legacy of public service. His grandfather, Jimmy Carter, was President and has gone on to serve the people through various humanitarian and diplomatic efforts. Jason Carter seems willing to carry on that tradition while also standing up on issues such as the death penalty, gun rights and marriage equality.

The hot topics in this race seem to be education, healthcare and unemployment. Almost every voter in Georgia should be concerned about all three. Pay careful attention to what is said and the records of the candidates before casting your vote. Brendan Spaar loves Georgia and hopes the man in charge will have the ability to move the state forward.

Does summer really matter once you grow up?

Remember when you were a kid and couldn't wait for the last day of school for the year? Summer vacation meant 3 whole months of fun, friends and adventures waiting for you. You'd spend time just hanging out with friends, maybe going to visit family or if you were lucky, a trip to someplace fun like Disneyworld. Great memories you'd use when you had to write the "What I did On My Summer Vacation" essay once school started again.

After you got older, things started to change. There were summer jobs, dating and things to keep you busy. Once you learned to drive, those car trips with the family weren't quite the same. Summers seemed to fly past. College was right around the corner and summer became part of the regular year school schedule for lots of people. Spring Break became the new summer vacation.

Now fast forward to today. You're an adult with a job and grownup responsibilities. That 3 month summer vacation you loved as a kid has shrunk to 2 weeks a year (3 if you're lucky). If you don't have kids yet, summer might just be another bunch of months on the calendar. Sometimes the summer "vacation" turns into a "staycation" because there never seems to be enough time or money to do what needs to be done.

Brendan Spaar thinks it's time to find the kid inside us that loved the summer. Spend one weekend each month during the summer and revisit the things that made summer so special. You might be surprised how much fun it is. Georgia is full of wonderful things. Start planning now for your next "summer vacation".

Could Jason Carter be the next Governor of Georgia?

Is the country ready for another Carter administration?  Some people in Georgia seem to think so.  Jason Carter, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, is set to run for Governor of Georgia in 2014 and he has many supporters in the state.  The current Governor, Republican Nathan Deal, will have a run for his money come election time.  Brendan Spaar would like to remind everyone that Deal made good on his promise to end the tolls on Georgia 400 but only because he was held accountable by the local media.  Even though Republicans are not a popular majority, they still hold high regard in the south.  Only time will tell if Carter has what it takes to win a major election.

Latest Paula Deen scandal: Cheating

Paula Deen makes some tasty looking food says Brendan Spaar
As if things couldn’t get worse for Paula Deen. It has been months since the world discovered that she allegedly used a racial slur decades ago and it would appear that she weathered the storm that the politically correct police sent her way. Now Brendan Spaar has discovered that she has a new public relations nightmare to deal with. According to the National Enquirer (the same magazine that accused Benny Hinn of having an affair when he wasn’t even married), Paula was allegedly seeking comfort with another man while waiting out the racial PR nightmare she was going through. Is Paula having marriage problems? Is Paula even still married? Only time will tell.

Mega preacher Joel Osteen believes most people want to give him money

Brendan J. Spaar of Alpharetta GA does not watch Joel Osteen on TVMany people have said over the years that mega preachers are nothing more than snake oil salesmen making promises to their flock in exchange for money. Brendan Spaar watched Joel Osteen this morning and found him to be a great motivational speaker. One thing that was a little odd was all of the merchandising throughout the hour. It seemed like every word was accompanied by something on screen prompting you to make a purchase whether it was for a book or an upcoming speaking engagement or even just “money for nothing.” Now Mr. Osteen is quoted as saying that ‘Most People Desire to Have a Relationship with God.’ Osteen may be confusing having a relationship with being God’s friend so that you can get into heaven. It’s sort of like putting up with a fat girl so that you can impress her hot girlfriend.

Post Office mail carrier takes short cut across lawn

Brendan J. Spaar gets very little mailIn what will probably be explained as an effort to reduce cost and workers compensation, a USPS Postal Service mail carrier has been caught on a security camera driving up to someone's house, cutting across their lawn, stopping in front of their porch and tossing two small packages.  Brendan Spaar remembers when mail carriers walked their routes.  Now they just drive around and throw things out the window.  This article is funny because it links to a YouTube video of other delivery people being lazy and cutting corners.  Sometimes there is no excuse for being lazy.

Wedding let’s them eat cake

Brendan Spaar would never leave someone at the altarThis is a story that turned sadness into a happy ending. You see, Carol and Willie Fowler’s daughter Tamara was all set to marry the love of her life. Unfortunately, the wedding was called off just 40 days before they she was set to wed. The parents had a great idea though, they decided to let 200 of the area’s homeless feast on the 4 course meal that had been planned for the wedding guests. Elizabeth Omilami from the Hosea Feed the Hungry, an Atlanta GA area organization, arranged for the meals to go to a great cause. She said that children make up 70 percent of Atlanta Georgia’s homeless to this truly turned tragedy into a blessing.

Brendan Spaar investigates if you should tip flight attendants

Let's face it, flight attendants do a lot for us when we fly. Brendan Spaar has always wondered if it is appropriate to tip a flight attendant for exceptional service. According to Lizzie Post who is Emily Post's great-great-granddaughter and author on modern etiquette advice, it is not appropriate to tip a flight attendant even when they are serving you alcohol. That begs the question, what is the difference between a bartender and a flight attendant? I guess one situation you are standing and the other you are sitting. The best way to reward a flight attendant accoring to the article is to write them a good review and email it to the airline. That way they will be looked favorably upon when it is time to give out raises.
